Our location and history
You’ll find our workshops and showroom located along the historic Darby’s Hard in Gorleston-on-Sea, where we started our life as Yare Boat Builders.
At that time, we specialised in hand built traditional ‘clinker’ boats, the direct descendants of Viking longships and even older vessels. Clinker, or Lapstrake, is a boat building method where the edges of the hull planks overlap each other, and is quite an art form with steam-bent oak ribs, copper roved mahogany, and larch planking all used in the process.
Moving with the times
Once upon a time Darby’s Hard was full of clinker boats being repaired and maintained, but the advent of modern fibreglass boats changed our marketplace forever.
We decided to apply our skills as woodworking craftsmen in different areas, and today we pride ourselves on providing a wide range of unique, handmade, high quality household furniture, including free-standing and fitted kitchens, home offices, beds, fitted wardrobes, and bedroom furniture.
